Staging Location for GRT backup job is set to C:\

Dear All,

I was aware that in order to have single item recovery using GRT a temporary space is required to stage the DB for example for exchange and then from there we can pull individual item. This is case when restoring from a tape.

Today I noticed that in backup exec 2012 under config settings > storage there is staging location also set to C:\ and this is for backup jobs. Before I never noticed this item and now I want to know that does backup exec also requires same huge amount of space when running GRT based backup jobs to tape ?

See attached picture with red outlined portion. Since, it doesn't make sense to me to assign another big partition to Bexec server for GRT backup jobs so for this I need to understand how much space it requires in staging area.

Kind Regards,

Restoring virtual machine using Netbackup CLI

Hay there!

I'm running Netbackup 7.6 on a win2k12 server, which acts both as master and media server.

I'm using it in order to back up VMware virtual machines, and now I'm tring to automate my restore proccess.

After reading about the nbrestorevm cmdlt, I feel that I still cant' figure out how to properly use it, and was hoping that someone here could guide me thrugh it.

The main things that I need to achieve are the following:

1. Restore the VM from the latest backup.

2. Name the restored VM diffrently from the source VM.

3. Restore the VM to a diffrent data store.

4. Use the same data store for all the VM's VMDK files.

5. Retain the VM's original hardware version.

6. Retain the original network configuration.

So... how the hell do I do that? Any help would be much appreciated!

Understanding Netbackup 5220 appliances Catalog/Machanics.

The base unit assigns 930GB for catalog what is this for? staging area etc. We have implemented advanced disk pool for catalog backups currently I do not  have a physical tape library attched to the infrastructure just yet.  The reasoning behind this I only carry out only full backups via accelerator the catalog will grow therefore to backup a large catalog quickly via using a advanced disk pool which has better read/write performance. Any suggestions of taking another copy of the catalog as we start migrating clients into the new appliance domain asap. Can I do cross site catalog backup for further protection in the mean time? I also configured AIR replication.  All testing is complete now just bring on VMware then start full blown migration.

Backup Exec Slot Priority

My company does daily backups and swaps tapes out daily (on Monday night, we only have Monday tapes loaded).  Once the tapes are used we send them offsite using a tape pickup/storage/delivery service, and to do that the tapes have to be labeled with barcoded labels.  We use multiple libraries for multiple servers that we host.  I have recently been asked to fill the empty slots of the libraries with blank spare tapes in the event that there is more data than the daily rotation tapes are able to hold.  The first day was a disaster when only the spare tapes were used.  I thought I had it fixed when I discovered Settings>Storage>Media overwrite options>Overwrite recyclable media contained in the targeted media set before over writing scratch media.

I had forgotten to take into account that every month, we remove the month end tapes from the rotation and put new tapes into the rotation, thereby making the rotation tapes also seen as scratch tapes, and then BE starts using a mix of rotation and spare tapes.  I've read many other posts that say to use partitions, but I don’t think that would work in this case because I still want the job to be able to pull from the spares if needed, which is why they are there in the first place.  Is there any way I can control which library slots have priority in Backup Exec without using partitions?

I have a an HP StoreEasy appliance that needs backed up.  It's running Windows 2012 Storage Server and per the most recent SCL that's not supported as a NetBackup 7.6 client.  I have ~40TB of data on this.  I'm also running NBU 5230's for master and media servers.  Please provide thoughts on the following scenarios.

1.  Install NBU 7.6 client although it's not technically supported.

OR

2.  Mount the shares on a Windows 2008 R2 server and backup the shares leveraging Accelerator & Client sided dedupe.  Would there be an issue recovering ACLs?

OR

3.  What would you recommend?

Thanks

Easy way to check from the clientside which includes are configured?

Hi guys,

title pretty much sums it up. Is there a command to easily check from the clinetside what includes are configured? I am looking for an analog of the bpcoverage command from the master.

Story behind this is that our server admins (Linux, AIX, HP-UX, etc) want to check if they forgot to include any important filesystems into the backup. (We are usually not working with ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES so there is a real danger of someone forgetting a new filesystem) Since the guys want to implement an automation I am looking for something that wont blow up my masters. (One of them is a tad old and with ~3,000 clients)

As we are currently still mostly running on NetBackup 7.1.0.3 any solution offered should work from that client level.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Chris

Netbackup BMR Tasks stuck in queued

HI,

Netbackup Env: Windows Server 2008 R2 + 4 media servers,

Master + Media NB version 7.5.0.7

I followed the process as HERE but:

My target machine si same architecture, 64bit but with different harware(disimilar restore).

For a disimilar restore, when I create Prepare to Discover task, the job in taks panel is in queued all time, more likely stuck, same for Prepare to Restore.

If I Prepare to Discover a server already backed-up with BMR option enable in policy, same thing, Prepare to Discover Job in Task pannel is stuck in queued mode. (please see the picture). (the server here is 100% connected, backup job 100% successful).

Aswell if I workarround and get BRM start on the target machine:

that means I mount the srtCD-boot in the target, I start a Generic BMR Restore and I discover the target from itself, then I can see the discovery of target machine.

after this, next step is when the restore is on going but only C:\ drive restore itself, the System State doesnt.

I checked in the Activity Monitor and only one job here. The restore on the target fails ofcourse and no other retore job occur for System State.

This is a bug? Why this happens, what do you think I should test/do.

SAP Netbackup failing (6) error

Hi,

A SAP backup (RHEL 2.6) has started failing:

3/04/2014 16:14:06 - Info bphdb (pid=2197) Waiting for the child status
03/04/2014 16:51:47 - Error bpbrm (pid=15127) from client xxxx: ERR - Script exited with status = 5 <the restore failed to recover the requested files>

03/04/2014 16:51:48 - end writing
the backup failed to back up the requested files  (6)

This failure is on the Automatic-Full-Backup type only, the 'data' backups from the Application Backup types work successfully.

My question is basically will I still be able to restore the SAP data even though the controlling (Full-Control) backup has failed..??..

Thanks in advance.

Hi We are actually upgrading our servers from Vsphere 4.1 to 5.1 First step was to upgrade Vcenter Server. We created a new one with same name and same IP Address. It worked like a charm form VMware part, and we are able to manager our 4.1 hosts. But in Backup Exec, backups do not work well anymore. At first, they were failing because VMs were not selected anymore in backup jobs. I selected VMs again for each backup job and backup do start again. It create snapshot, backup Vm and suppress snapshot correctly. But job fail with this kind of error. VMTools were not upgraded in Vms and VMware Hosts still are in 4.1. Only Vcenter was upgraded right now. Agents are in VM BackupExec server is 2012 SP3. Agents are not all SP3, but it is failing too for all jobs even if Agent version is the last one Backup-

Backup exec job showing as not scheduled .... and also deleted

Hi,

I don't know what's happening. I am trying to add a scheduled backup job to hard disk and then replicated to a tape drive in Backup Exec 2010. I have some six other jobs working with duplicate to tape setup without any problems. This particular job is just refusing to run. As soon as I schedule it, it will give you a summary of what the job is going to do. Below is part of the backup summary.

General

Policy name:MYSERVER Policy
Policy description:MYSERVER Policy

Policy Templates

MYSERVER Backup Template
MYSERVER Duplicate Backup Sets Template

Template Rules

Duplicate all backup sets that were created by MYSERVER Backup Template using MYSERVER Duplicate Backup Sets Template as scheduled.

When I go and check the scheduled  job I only find the MYSERVER Backup to disk backup job with a job status TO BE SCHEDULED. After a couple of seconds it will disappear. When I click on the Job Setup Tab and right click on MYSERVER Policy and select "View Selection List backed up by policy" there is no selection lisst assign to this policy, while for the others there is a selection list assign according to the server. I also tried deleting the jobs created by policy and its giving me a popup Unable to delete jobs. The are no selection lists associated with this policy.

Can someone please explain what is happening?

Thanks
Ruben

Catalog backup size not reduced after catalog compression

Hi,

Our catalog backup is about 98GB in size and runs for about 3 hours. We are looking at ways of speeding this up and have gone down the compression route. (Netbackup 6.5.0.6 - Windows 2003 R2 Master)

I have appled catalog compression using the recommended "staggered approach" and we have now compressed all images older than 32 days and we have seen the db/images folder reduce in terms of the size on disk from 92GB to 56GB. The problem is that the Catalog backup itself is stil at 98GB and has actually gone up in duration to 3 and half hours. (I know the increase could be dependant on how busy the environment is but sure we should at leaset have seen the backup reduce in size since the compression)

I know its not a complicated process but just want to make sure I havent missed something :

>> Ensure catalog backup isnt running

>> Set catalog compress interval

>> run bpimage -cleanup -allclients

>> Check the db/images folder on completetion and can see a reduction of size on disk and image files in blue to indicate compression.

I cant understand why the catalog backup is still 98GB. Maybe I need to restart Netbackup ? I dont want to suggest this unless I am pretty confident it will resolve the problem as we have to force a window and puts us a behind a little with Vaulting.

Has anyone had something similar and can you advise?

Thanks

Nick

Catalog Recovery through AIR

Hi All,

I recently checked AIR feature for replicating de-duplicated data to DR site, however today i spoke with Symantec support. I suggested about catalog replication and do a tape less DR catalog recovery rather than building Catalog through DR Image file

What are everyone's views on this?

BE2012 Support for OL6.3...Seriously!

Hello,

My environment is quickly moving forward wiith Linux kernel updates and BE2012 is not following soon enough!

The current SCL shows compatibility up to Oracle Linux 6.1. Oracle is already relesing OL6.5. I have tested with the higher kernel and BE2012 will not work.

I am running BE2012 SP3 on a Windows 2008 R2 server.

Does anyone at Symantec have a clue as to when the compatibility will be updated.

My planned production environment will be Oracle Linux 6.3 with the kernel level - 2.6.39-200.24.1.el6uek.x86_64

Thanks

Michele

Slow SAP Backups (Oracle)

Hi there,

I'm experiencing a strange issue, but I don't think it has anything to do with Netbackup. However, I'd like to put this out there to see if any of you have a solution.

We have two VM's. Both are SAP and both run Oracle 11g.Both DB's are roughly the same size. Approx: 640GB

Both VM's are in the same SAP backup policy.

VM1 has 2 vCPU's and 16 GB of RAM

VM2 has 4 vCPU's and 16 GB of RAM

VM1's backup is is 3 hours.

VM2's backup is 11 hours.

Both are running Windows 2008 Datacentre and are both backing up to the same storage unit. VM1 runs at about 60 MB / sec, and VM2 is about 15 MB/sec.

Each VM is running on a different ESX host, however, vmotion does not solve the problem.

Both VM's storage is on the same SAN (XIV)

Therefore, is there any oracle parameters (outside of Netbackup) that could affect backups? Could Oracle be causing this issue?

We have this very same issue on a few other VM's. Some backup very fast, some slow (That's in our TSM environment)

If anybody can help, it would be appreciated.

We are running Netbackup 7.6 on Windows 2008 R2. We have one media / master server.

Backing up Selected Data only

Hi guys,

We currently run back-up Exec 2012 to run a full tape back-up of a couple of our servers each night. The problem we have at present however is that the job takes around 12 hours am some times is still running when users arrive the next day.

Iv'e considered changing the back-ups to incremental/ differential, however I believe a full back-up each night is still the best approach for our business.

Quite abit of our data has not been accessed for some time, so one idea I have had is to decrease the time a full back-up takes, by only backing-up data accessed within a certain time period, but my question is - is there a better way of decreasing the time a full back-up takes? If not, what's the best way to archive off old data from a file server?

Kind regards smiley
